Hatteras Hammocks and Pawley's Island Hammocks are two of the best known
hammock brand names, and both are manufactured by The Hammock Source
headquartered in Greenville, North Carolina. The Pawley's Island Hammock
has a signature "bent" or "curved" oak spreader bar and a distinctive
brass nameplate, while the Hatteras Hammock has a straight spreader bar
and brands the logo on the oak bar with a wood burning brand.
Both hammocks, however, use the same high quality materials, including
solid oak spreaders and specially made three ply rope available in
cotton or polyester.
Hatteras Hammocks® was founded in 1971, after company founder Walter
Perkins Jr. began selling hammocks he had purchased on business trips
out of the trunk of his car. Perkins took apart one of the hammocks in
his garage, fixated on improving its design.
"This was a perfect example of a hobby becoming a business," Perkins
said. The first of Mr. Perkins' new "Hatteras Hammocks" were sold to
friends in Greenville, NC, while others were taken down to the coast
of North Carolina and sold to visitors in that area.
By 1987, Hatteras Hammocks® had become the largest rope hammock
manufacturer in the world. Today, Hatteras Hammocks® continues to be
the industry leader with continuous additions to its innovative product
line that include hammocks, stands, swings, and hammock accessories, as
well as state of the art improvements to its manufacturing capabilities.
