Hammock owners should strive to be good people, so they should consider
the long-term health of the trees from which they hang their hammocks.
Trees need to be protected and need to be strong and study if they are
going to be used as support for hammocks. This applies for camping
hammocks as well as standard yard or house hammocks.
You don't need to drill holes, fasten bolts or secure your hammock with
metal fasteners that could hurt or kill the all important tree. A number
of products are now available that are safe for you and the tree! Tree
protectors actually wrap around the tree trunk and feature a loop that
you can use to connect your hammock. The tree protectors also help to
distribute the force so that it is not all on one part of the tree.
After making sure the tree is big and strong enough, you can use tree
protectors that wrap around the trunk, giving you a secure surface to
lay your hammock ropes. If the tree is not big enough, the hammock may
pull the tree down which could damage the tree or injure the hammock
occupant.
Always use the correct ropes to hang your hammock, and never stretch
trees to make your hammock fit. When in doubt, consider using a hammock
stand, or one tree and a hammock post. You can always use these items
or find another location where the trees are a lot closer together.
